Yerba Mate vs. Green Tea Yerba mate and green tea share some of the same health benefits. This being the case, it may be useful to compare them. Both yerba mate and green tea have antioxidant properties. Evidence has shown that yerba mate has a higher antioxidant capacity than green tea. It has been found that the higher antioxidant capacity of yerba mate correlates to a slightly higher polyphenol concentration, namely chlorogenic acid. Chlorogenic acid is one of several of the caffeoyl derivatives which are the primary constituents that account for the antioxidant capacity of yerba mate. This correlates well with the fact that yerba mate has also been shown to be more cytotoxic to cancer cells than is green tea.

Yerba mate is known to increase energy levels. This is no doubt due to the xanthine compounds, of which caffeine is the main one. Yerba mate has a concentration of caffeine that is comparable to that in coffee and is more than that in green tea. Other xanthines in yerba mate that serve to bolster its’ energizing effect are theobromine, which is also in chocolate, and theophylline. These are compounds that are not readily found in other teas which is why yerba mate feels better than green tea. The concentration of saponin compounds is higher in yerba mate than in other teas. Yerba mate may attribute its’ anti-inflammatory and hypocholesterolemic (cholesterol lowering) properties to the saponins. This is an important consideration for those with high cholesterol problems.
